Hip-hop legend Missy Elliott will receive the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award at the 2019 Video Music Awards (VMA) later this month, MTV has announced.
The rapper will also perform live at the awards ceremony, returning to the VMA stage for the first time since 2003, according to a release from the television station. She is also making history as the first female rapper to win the award, Billboard reported.
Elliott becomes the fourth rapper to win the award, following other legendary rap artists like LL Cool J, Kanye West, and the Beastie Boys. She also joins artists like Jennifer Lopez, Beyoncé, and Janet Jackson in winning the prestigious award, according to MTV News. MTV called the rapper “one of the most influential musicians known for elevating other music artists.”
