Congresswoman Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) blasted a federal judge after announcing that a Coast Guard officer who is accused of plotting a domestic terror attack and threatening several Democrats and media figures will be released from detention.
Self-proclaimed white supremacist Christopher Hasson was indicted on weapons and drug charges in February but was not charged with terrorism or attempted murder. Hasson pleaded not guilty to charges in March, according to CNN.
Hasson’s public defender argued that the government could not continue to hold him in detention because it is “not a crime to think negative thoughts about people.” Judge Charles Day agreed, and said that the government failed to meet the standard for continued detention.
